Portview is proud to announce the successful delivery of the new Double Helix Staircase at Fortnum & Mason’s iconic Piccadilly store, a transformative project that blends engineering ingenuity, exceptional craftsmanship, and deep respect for the heritage of one of London’s most celebrated retail destinations.
Unveiled to the public in time for the festive season, the staircase was officially opened this morning by His Majesty King Charles III. Members of the Portview project team were on site to welcome His Majesty and represent the skill, care and collaboration that brought this ambitious design to life. The royal opening marks a historic moment for Fortnum & Mason and a proud milestone for everyone involved in the project.
A Modern Masterpiece Rooted in History
Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s visionary double helix geometry, of which only a select few examples exist worldwide, the new staircase appears as a seamless, elegant form rising through the store’s central atrium. Two intertwining staircases spiral around each other like strands of DNA, allowing visitors to ascend and descend simultaneously without crossing paths.
Meticulously integrated into the fabric of the Grade II listed building, the staircase feels immediately at home within the store’s historic architectural narrative, enhancing rather than overwhelming its character.
We are honoured to have contributed to this significant chapter in the store’s history, and to see the project inaugurated by His Majesty the King is a moment of immense pride for everyone involved.
Craftsmanship at an Exceptional Scale
The complexity and artistry of the staircase are reflected in its remarkable construction:
- 660 polished brass rosettes
- 340 metres of handrail
- 330 bespoke balustrades
- 132 precision-crafted steps
- Each panel hand-crafted with eight forged scrolls, totalling 2,640 in all
Every element was custom-made, demonstrating Portview’s commitment to delivering craftsmanship of the highest calibre.
A Sculptural Centrepiece for Generations to come
Sustainability played a central role in the project’s development and delivery. Original materials from the previous staircase were carefully salvaged, restored, and thoughtfully repurposed, reducing waste and preserving elements of the store’s architectural legacy.
The completed staircase now stands as a striking sculptural centrepiece, an expression of heritage, design excellence and engineering innovation at the heart of Fortnum & Mason’s flagship store. Its successful delivery is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Portview team and our valued partners.
