The Bridge, ExCeL Arena

The ExCeL Arena is an exhibition and international convention centre in the Docklands area of London. Located within the borough of Newham, on a 100-acre site on the northern quay of the Royal Victoria Dock, the centre required a major upgrade of its hospitality offering, a call ably answered by Portview.

The project involved fitting out a new restaurant, bar, kiosks, bakery, and coffee shop, starting with a full strip out. The programme of work included a showstopping large steel frame built to enclose the Boulevard Bar, with accompanying seating and a staircase erected up through the frame to access the mezzanine restaurant. The frame and accompanying curtain structure linked both areas, while the boulevard (featuring the café, coffee shop and bakery) was created adjacent to a kiosk.

The project involved several different cladding systems for the internal finishes, including a bespoke, folded perforated, powder-coated metal sheet. Man-made sheeting with a slate finish and Marley Eternite cladding also provided an eye-catching design element within the bakery.

A passenger lift and two dumb waiters, one servicing the restaurant and the other the bakery, were installed, while underfoot, stone and tiles were used to surface the floor area. The bar interiors were given a polished stainless-steel finish while stone counters added texture to the space.

Key Point

The kiosk, which incorporated a take-away facility, was developed using a similar metal frame and was constructed to link the whole scheme together.
