Flexible modular teaching rooms
Office space, meeting rooms, teaching spaces and consultation booths play a key role in the day-to-day functioning of the university, but as with any building of this size and eclectic occupancy, the requirements for these rooms change daily.

The challenge presented was to create a self-contained suite of rooms throughout the building that could be made smaller or larger within minutes for a variety of uses, while at all times retaining acoustic, ventilation and fire safety compliance. We fabricated a series of 35 moveable wall structures that enabled each room to change size and function within minutes.
Each room retained its acoustic rating thanks to the precision design of walls and doors and by fixing Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool acoustic panels and rafts to the ceiling. Our unique approach to overcoming the challenges posed by the meeting room modularity was supported by modelling structural aspects of the project and the integration of multi-disciplinary data to create a precise, predictive BIM representation.
Perimeter bench and integrated solar gain control shutters
Low maple hardwood benches ‘float’ around the internal perimeter of the building on most floors. Portview created the casual meeting spaces, as well as completing all joinery and an integrated an innovative shutter system on the elevations facing the sun. When opened, the shutters allow sunlight to flood the space, and create private bright ‘booths’ that accommodate up to four people.
With the heightened solar gain, the temperature increases in the room, the shutters can be adjusted to three pre-determined angles, depending on the sun’s position, to reduce the sunlight entering the building. The shutters are not completely opaque, allowing diffused light into each room, but deflecting almost all of the associated heat. In total, we installed shutters on 900 windows as well as the perimeter bench seating.

Washrooms
Our installation of all 32 general washroom blocks in the building included resin floors, black metal service ceilings, ventilation and ceramic tiled walls. Corian basins were pre-formed in the factory and installed on a floating steel structure that also supported mirrors with incorporated hand-dryers and hinged access for services accessibility. We fitted both standard and accessible cubicles on all floors. Our remit extended to virtually all aspects of washroom install, including MEP.
One unique prerequisite was the provision of wet-rooms designed specifically for rinsing plaster moulds used by students as part of their coursework. On lower levels we installed cycle storage, showers and changing room facilities for students and faculty.
