The Mermaid Maternity Retreat provides private healthcare, covering the period from early pregnancy until six months after the birth.
Opened by HRH Princess Alexandra and situated in London’s fashionable Kings Road, the £3m healthcare project comprised the strip-out and fit-out of approximately 10,000 sq ft of luxury accommodation.
The facility offers 14 bedrooms with ensuite facilities; beauty and therapeutic treatment rooms; a neonatal nursery and crèche; aerobics and dance studio; guest restaurant and bar and a reception area featuring bespoke furniture and counters incorporating high end fabrics, corian and stone. Access to the rooms is via an electronic fob system and security is reinforced by CCTV. All accommodation has been soundproofed to minimise external noise.

The building was originally office space at the top of the landmark Heal’s building. The brief required the team to turn this space into a contemporary, luxury retreat for new mothers, providing 5 star comfort and facilities with peace and quiet in one of the UK’s busiest urban areas.
Staff quarters and administration offices had to be included without intruding into the visitor and guest areas. The budget of £3m was to be stringently adhered to, requiring the project management, fit-out and design teams to work together to value-engineer the specification from the original estimate of over £4m before they could be awarded the contract.
Quality had to be maintained throughout the fabrication and structure, despite the value engineering. Using in-house CAD systems, the team created working drawings for each section of the project and for each piece of equipment. Creative solutions had to be applied without incurring extra cost to deal with site-specific issues that arose during the fit-out.
The Portview team found themselves with low ceiling heights, necessitating the use of floor voids to take all the services. As a result, the team and the architects had to develop a bespoke tanking system for the walk-in shower areas to ensure that there could be no leakages into the shop below.
Every piece of furniture, ironmongery and flooring materials was reviewed to ensure that the specified aesthetic and durability performance standards could be assured. The team, including the client, met in person at every stage in order to get the value-engineering process right. Corian and stone were used, together with high-quality fabrics.
